The certification is part of KCB’s social responsibility effort whereby the Group had identified environmental protection as one of its key themes. As an established resort and golf course operator, the Group has always maintained an ‘environmental-friendly’ approach for its hotel operations including minimizing wastage, maximize the use of energy-saving device, proper disposal of waste materials, recycling of used materials and adopting environmental best practices wherever possible.

The ISO 14001:2004 is a part of a series of international standards applicable to any organizations in relation to environmental management system. A system of this kind enables an organization to develop an environmental policy, establish objectives and processes to achieve the policy commitments, take action as needed to improve its performance and demonstrate conformity of the system to the requirements of the ISO 14001:2004 standards. The overall aim of the ISO 14001:2004 is to support environmental protection and prevention of pollution in balance with socio-economic needs.

In a ceremony held at the VSNRK to celebrate the occasion, KCB’s Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Robin Loh said, “By becoming ISO 14001:2004 certified, we are making a strong commitment to our various stakeholders that our business operations focuses on environmental protection, sustainability, quality in its services and facilities, health & safety, and social responsibility”.

With over a year of preparation, the Group had formed a special ISO team (comprising of Steering Committee, Environment Management Representative, Document Controller, Chemical Control Team, Waste Management Team, Safety & Health Committee, Training & Communication and Legal Team) to lead the Group’s organization towards the certification. The entire process includes reviewing the impact of its operations on the environment, detailed inspections, cross audits amongst its group of companies, documentation updates and compliance with the ISO standards, information collation and analysis, new working systems and practices.

Datuk Robin Loh said that with the ISO 14001:2004 certification, the Group is expected to garner better market opportunities as the certification is an indication that its hotel and golf course conforms to internationally set environmental standards in every aspect of its operations. With an increasing awareness of environmental concerns amongst the public, guests for its hotel and golf course would be pleased to know that Nexus’ hotel and golf course facilities are truly environmentally-friendly.

The Group has already set a blueprint for its environmental efforts including the maintenance of the ISO 14001:2004 standards (which goes through an annual re-certification audit to ensure strict conformance and full commitment to set standards), setting up of a wildlife fund, turtle sanctuary in Karambunai peninsular and a series of other activities to support the Group’s social responsibility theme for environmental protection.
