Nexus Resort Karambunai treats students to Hari Raya joy
Bringing cheer to those less fortunate
20 October 2007

A fun day was had by all during the Nexus Resort Karambunai Open House at the Lagoon Park on Saturday, 20 October 2007. Happy smiling faces were the norm on that day as 43 students and 4 teachers of Sekolah Ugama Islam Sabah Tambunan were treated to a day of outdoor fun and games. The weather was perfect as the students took to the waters of the Lagoon Park for banana boat rides, kayaking and a tumble on the trampoline.

Mr Peter Sprenger, General Manager of Nexus Resort, department heads and staff were on hand to welcome their guests and to participate in the activities. Sponsorship from Wildlife Expedition and Tinggi Press helped make the occasion a success. The banquet staff was dressed in their most colourful baju melayu and baju kurung which gave a festive atmosphere during the buffet lunch of delicious Malay food. Staff from the various departments made sure the students had enough to eat and engaged them in friendly conversation.

Nexus Resort Karambunai recognizes the need to fulfill its community obligation and extend a helping hand whenever possible to those less fortunate. Sekolah Ugama Islam Sabah Tambunan has 134 students ranging from 8 – 15 years old staying at the hostel which was provided for by Jabatan Hal Ehwal Agama Islam Sabah. Boarding and food is taken care of but for other necessities, the school has to depend on public donations. According to the Headmistress and hostel warden, Ustazah Zubaidah, the school and hostel is always appreciative of any assistance that may be extended to them. The critical factor however is the shortage of teachers that they are experiencing. Currently, there are only 3 full-time teachers and several volunteer teachers at the school.

Set up in 1975, the religious school is a haven for many families who cannot afford to put their children through school with regular boarding facilities. Here their children are guaranteed a place to stay, even though they had to sleep on the classroom floor till the hostel was built in 1996. They still attend regular school elsewhere in the morning but have their religious education and boarding at the religious school. For now, the children have to learn to be independent and live the best life possible with what they have.

Hopefully this day out will let them know that others are thinking of them and know only too well that children should always be given the chance to just be children and enjoy the simplest pleasures in life.
