Clairines Joseph of Malaysia and An-An Awitan of the Philippines takes the singles titles at Malaysian Open
05 July 2009

It was an all Malaysian affair for the Men Single title when Clarines Joseph of Kitchen A and Mohd Latip Sapup of Dury 9 went head to head in the finals. Clarines Joseph won the close fight 4-2 to rapturous applause from the audience in the Grand Buntunggan Ballroom.

In joint 3rd and 4th were Taro Yachi of Japan and Robert Calupit of the Philippines.

The Ladies Singles title was won by An-An Awitan of the Philippines who beat Merlyn Mudi of Malaysia with a 3-2 score. It was a sweet victory for An-An who lost to Merlyn in the finals of the 1st Nexus Sabah Open played at the same venue last year.

Both singles events are ranked by the World Darts Federation and British Dart Organisation.

The 2nd Chance Team Event was won by MAS KLIA who beat TRC Y with a score of 7-5. On the way to the finals, MAS KLIA comprising of Abd Rahman B Hussin, Mohammad Mujahid Arare, Hashim Ismail, Sulaiman B Ramli and Azhar B Ahmad overcame All Friends while Liew Shong Soon, Lau Chee Chung, Liew Loon On and Goh Teng Luck of TRC Y best DJ-West.

Mr Peter Sprenger (Group General Manager of Nexus Resort), Albert Jan Vasseur (Executive Assistant Manager of Nexus Resort), Peter Yeong (Area Sales Manager of Carlsberg Malaysia), Dharam Singh (President of Malaysia Darts Federation) and Jerome Turner (President of Singapore Darts Association) were on hand to present prizes to all the winners on the last day of the championship.

This year’s Malaysian Open not only recorded the highest number of entries but it is also the first time a loser’s pool is organized simultaneously. This has made the event more competitive as teams are given a second chance to improve their game and come away with prize money.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports sponsored t-shirts for all the Sabah teams who came in droves to participate in the event. For some, this was the first national level dart competition that they have taken part in and they were very pleased with the support shown by the Ministry.

Participants, particularly those from overseas, were also very impressed with the traditional vinusak-motif bead necklace they received as souvenir from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment during the opening ceremony which gave the event a touch of Sabahan culture.

The 29th Malaysian Open Darts Championship has proven that darts has a large following in Sabah and with more high-caliber events such as this; the sport has the potential to produce players of national and international class from the state.
