29th Malaysian Open records highest entry
03 July 2009

The 29th Malaysian Open Darts Championship was launched by Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports, Datuk Jahid Jahim at the Grand Buntunggan Ballroom Nexus Resort Karambunai this morning.

Datuk Jahid was welcomed by Mr Peter Sprenger, Group General Manager of Nexus Resort who is the host and official venue for the event. Together with him was Mr Dharam Singh, the President of Malaysian Dart Federation and presidents of dart associations from the Philippines, Brunei and Singapore.

A total of 103 teams had registered for the event which is the highest record entry for the championship to date. The Malaysian Open is being held in Sabah for the first time and the local support has been overwhelming with more than half of the entries coming from Sabah itself.
In his speech, Datuk Jahid said that as a developing sport, darts has much room for improvement and maturity and would like to see the sport attracting not just seasoned players but also young players who can recognize darts as a competitive sport.

Preliminary rounds for the Team Event will start today with the finals to be played on July 4.  The loser’s pool, the Nexus 2nd Chance Team Event will be played on July 4 only and the prize presentation for both Team Events will be held in the evening.

The Ladies and Men Singles, which is officially ranked by the World Darts Federation, will start on July 4 and the finals on July 5.

The 3-day championship from July 3-5 at Grand Buntunggan Ballroom is open to the public to watch and support their favourite home team.
